I hope I am not the only one who is in love with how innovative JAMB has become in recent years. Previously they concentrated on conducting the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and nothing more.
But now, they’re not just conducting the entrance exam, they’re actively involved in the whole admission process. One of the changes they have made in their bid to become more involved in the admission process is creating the JAMB marketplace system.
This system ensures that students with lower UTME scores or those who were not admitted into their first-choice institution still have a chance to gain admission.
What is JAMB marketplace system?
The JAMB Marketplace System is a platform on the JAMB Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) that allows schools to offer admission to students who meet their requirements but were not admitted by their original choice of institution.
For example, if you applied to University A but were not admitted due to competition or a high cutoff mark, another university (University B) that has vacant spaces in your course of choice can offer you admission through the JAMB Marketplace System.
In addition, if you’re offered admission by your chosen University but you don’t like the course they offered, and therefore reject the admission, JAMB will return your application on their marketplace on the CAPS.

While there, any institution that is interested in offering you admission will contact you to change your institution to theirs and they’ll offer you admission.
For example – Preferred University, Unwanted course:
John applied to the University of Lagos (UNILAG) to study Medicine, but he was instead offered admission to study Biology.
Since he is not interested in Biology, he rejects the admission offer on JAMB CAPS.
His application is then placed on JAMB Marketplace, where another university, like Lagos State University (LASU), sees his profile and offers him admission to study Medicine.
LASU will contact him to change his institution, and once he does, they’ll offer him admission.
Example 2 – Competitive course not offered:
Aisha wanted to study Law at the University of Ibadan (UI), but she was given admission to study Political Science instead.
She rejects the offer because she only wants to study Law.
JAMB then places her profile on their Marketplace, and another university, like Babcock University, finds her and is willing to admit her for Law.

They notify her to change her institution to Babcock, and once she does, they’ll offer her admission.
So, if you are asked; “What is the JAMB marketplace system for admission?”.
Below is what it means.
What is the marketplace in JAMB Caps?
The JAMB Marketplace is a system that helps schools with openings for admission to find students who were not admitted into their desired course by their chosen institutions.
If a school has space and you meet their admission requirements, they’ll contact you for a change of institution to theirs and then offer you admission to your desired course.
How does JAMB Marketplace work?
In the marketplace:
- JAMB first places a candidate’s application there.
- Then schools like Universities, polytechnics, and colleges that have openings for admission will check JAMB CAPS for students who meet their admission requirements but were not admitted elsewhere.
- If an institution finds you qualified for their course, they’ll contact you with an offer of admission through the JAMB Marketplace.
- You’ll receive a notification on your JAMB CAPS portal that a university has offered you admission through the marketplace.
- If you’re satisfied with the new institution and course, you can accept the admission.
- If you don’t want the offer, you can reject it.
- If you accept, JAMB will update your admission status, and you’ll receive an admission letter.
How to check if you have an admission offer on the JAMB marketplace
To check if you’ve been offered admission through the JAMB Marketplace System:
- Go to the JAMB CAPS portal
- Click on “E-Facility” and log in with your JAMB details.
- Select “Check Admission Status”
- Click on “Access My CAPS”
- Scroll down and look for “Marketplace Admission”
- If an institution has offered you admission, you’ll see it there.
- Click “Accept” or “Reject” based on your preference.
Will I lose my first-choice institution if I accept a JAMB marketplace admission?
Yes. Once you accept an admission offer from another institution through the marketplace, your first-choice institution will no longer consider you.

Can I reject a marketplace offer and still wait for my first-choice institution?
Yes. If you do not want the offer, simply reject it, and you can still wait for your first-choice institution.
Do I need to pay to access the JAMB marketplace?
No. The JAMB Marketplace is free, and candidates do not need to pay to access their admission status.
4. Does a marketplace offer guarantee admission?
No. If a school offers you admission through the marketplace, you must accept it before it becomes valid.

If you ignore it, the offer will expire.
Final thoughts
I like the idea of the JAMB Marketplace System because it’s an opportunity for students who were not admitted by their preferred school to still gain admission into other universities, polytechnics, or colleges.
If you find yourself in this situation, always check JAMB CAPS to see if you have an offer.
If you receive an admission through the marketplace, check the school and course carefully before you make a decision.
Good luck with your admission.
