Among all the updates you’ll possibly see when you check your application status on JAMB CAPS, “not admitted” is the one nobody hopes for.
When you see “not admitted”, it’s almost as though there is no hope for admission anymore.
And, this is where many students get it wrong. “Not admitted” does not entirely mean that you won’t get admission.
it simply means your name isn’t on the released admission lists yet.
Therefore, when you see it, don’t panic. Your status can change as the review of your application gets to its final stage.
Can it be changed to application in progress? Of course, it can.
Can “not admitted” change to admission in progress JAMB CAPS?
Yes, “Not Admitted” can change to “Admission in Progress” on JAMB CAPS if your chosen school has not released all of its admission lists, and therefore considers you for admission in one of its upcoming lists.
This happens when the school is still updating/processing its admission lists or if something changes that makes you eligible for admission.

How “not admitted’ Can change to admission in progress
Your status can change from “Not Admitted” to “Admission in Progress”:
1. If the school is still uploading its admission lists when you checked your status
One of the most common reasons for seeing “Not Admitted” is that the school has not yet released all its admission lists on JAMB CAPS.
Most schools release their admission lists in batches, like the first, second, and even third batches.
If you checked your status early and saw “Not Admitted,” and the school has not released all of its admission lists, you don’t have to panic.
It can change to “Admission in Progress” when the next batch is processed.

Like, once the school starts processing the next batch of admission lists and your name is included, your status will change from “Not Admitted” to “Admission in Progress” and finally to “Admitted”.
If your status changes from “not admitted” to admission in progress, it means there is hope.
You have a good chance of getting admission.
Remember, admission in progress means that your application is at the final processing stage, and the school admission office is about to decide on your application.
Their decision can be positive (admitted) or negative (not admitted).
The good thing is that since it was “not admitted” before the change, you have a higher chance of getting “admitted” than going back to “not admitted”.
2. Your status can also change if you now meet the school’s admission requirements after initially not meeting it
If initially, you didn’t meet the school’s admission requirements but later became eligible due to some adjustments or updates, your status can change from “Not Admitted” to “Admission in Progress”.
For example:
- If you recently uploaded your O’level result: If you recently made changes to your O’level results on JAMB CAPS, the school will re-evaluate your eligibility for admission. If the new results meet the admission requirements, your status will change to “Admission in Progress.”
- If you recently corrected an error in your application: If you make a mistake in your application like in subject combinations, or course choices, it’ll make you ineligible for admission which means your status will show “Not Admitted” when you check it. If you correct the error, the school will reconsider your application for admission which will make your status change to “admission in Progress“.
- If there is a policy change in the school’s admission requirements: Sometimes, schools will lower their cut-off marks if they need more students for a particular course. This can make you who were previously ineligible to be eligible for admission.
How it changes:
Once the school re-evaluates your new information and finds you eligible for admission, your status will automatically change to “Admission in Progress” as your application is now being considered for admission.
3. It can also change if more admission slots become available
To be frank, sometimes admission is highly competitive, and schools have limited slots for each course.
If a course becomes full and you haven’t been admitted, you’ll see “Not Admitted.” However, this can change later if:
- Someone declined their admissions: If other candidates decline their admission offers, those slots become available for other eligible candidates.
- Someone changes course: If some admitted students switch to different courses, slots will open and you can be considered for admission, which will change your status from “Not Admitted” to “Admission in Progress”.
How it changes:
If you are next in line and a slot opens up, your status will change from “Not Admitted” to “Admission in Progress” because the school will start processing your admission to fill up the open slot.
4. Your status can change if there is an error or delay in processing admission lists
When the school witnesses delays or glitches in uploading the admission list (that has your name) on JAMB CAPS, it’ll cause your status to initially show “Not Admitted” before changing.
5. It can change if JAMB takes a longer time to approve the admission list containing your name
After a school selects you for admission, JAMB must approve the admission before it becomes official.
To approve an admission list, JAMB will check your UTME score, O’level results, and other admission requirements.
Before JAMB processes and approves your name, your admission status will show “Not admitted”.

But as soon as JAMB approves your admission, your status will change to “Admission in Progress,” showing that the school’s offer is now being processed for final confirmation.
6. Your status will change if you’re being considered for alternative courses
Sometimes, the course you applied for will be too competitive, if you don’t get admitted into the course, the school will place you for another course that is related to your chosen course.
It could be that you narrowly missed the cut-off mark for your preferred course but meet the requirements for a related course, the school will offer you the related course.
During this process, your status will show “Not admitted” but once they start considering you for a related course, it’ll change to “Admission in Progress”.
7. Your status can change if the school re-visit applications
During the whole admission process, schools continuously go through all submitted applications.
If they revisit your application and find you eligible, they’ll reconsider you for admission.
For example, if you made any updates or corrections on JAMB CAPS, the school will re-evaluate your application.
How it changes:
If the school selects you during a re-evaluation, your status will change from “Not Admitted” to “Admission in Progress” as the school begins processing your admission.
What to do if you have not been given admission
If you have not been given admission:
- Don’t panic: When you see “Not Admitted”, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve been disqualified. It can just mean that the batch in which your name is included hasn’t been uploaded yet.
- Keep checking your status regularly: Admission processes take time, so always check your status.
- Make sure your O’Level results are uploaded: Go to your profile and confirm that your O’Level results are on JAMB CAPS.
- Check your school: To know when the admission list is out, follow your school’s website or social media handles.
Can I go to school without JAMB giving me admission?

Even if a school lists your name on their admission portal, your admission is not valid until it is confirmed on JAMB CAPS.
Does “Not Admitted” mean I won’t get admission?
No. “Not Admitted” simply means your name is not on the current list. You can still be admitted in subsequent lists.

Whether or not you meet the admission requirement is where your hope lies.
If you meet the requirements, you’ll get admission even if it’s not the course you applied for.
However, if you do not meet the admission requirements, you have to go for other options because you won’t be offered admission.
Sometimes, you can meet the admission requirements but because of quota limitations or limited slots, you won’t get admission.
This happens all the time in competitive courses like Medicine, Law Pharmacy and the rest.
When you check your admission status on JAMB CAPS and see “Not Admitted”, it’ll surely be discouraging, but it doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t get admission.
It can later change to “Admission in Progress” and subsequently “admitted” as the processing of your application continues.
